Military jewellery

News item taken from 'Noticeboard'

Occasionally items land on my desk, or in the TSC inbox, that catch my eye and although not our usual toy soldier material I think are worthy of a mention in the magazine. I recently received an email from a company called Gewelometry who make men’s jewellery, including some rather interesting military themed items. Primarily from what I can tell the company make men’s signet rings featuring a variety of subjects from the P-51 Mustang to a Trojan Helmet and even the very recogniseable Napoleonic Eagle, interestingly enough if you visit the company’s eBay store you will also find some 54mm figures as it appears the person behind the business also makes the odd figure.

Toy Soldier Collector Mountford Civilians

Mountford Civilians

News item taken from 'Noticeboard'

In December, Mountford’s WWII theme is continued with a British street scene during the Blitz. A mobile NAAFI wagon is serving tea and buns to a group of civil defence workers, ARP Wardens and the like.

This scene of fortitude by the civilian population will be further enhanced with the release of a shop and pavement set. The shop depicted will be typically British and undamaged, a first in this field on both counts. It is hoped that this will be part one of a series, with the aim being to provide at least a couple of buildings that can serve as the back drop for almost any collection from Victorian times through to the present day. The Humber NAFFI Wagon Master will come complete with a mixture of civilians taking advantage of the refreshments on offer while a female will be included in the set inside the vehicle dispensing the cups of tea etc.

Part two, due to be released sometime in 2010 hopefully, will include another shop with an Emergency Fire Tender, and there might even be a third release although no definite details on this were available at the time of writing. As already mentioned, when displayed together the buildings will provide a backdrop for any figure collection from the Victorian period through to the present day, it should be noted that the theme for this range is very much first and foremost The Blitz. However, that said the shop will be available to be purchased separately from the other pieces in this new range if it’s just that which catches your eye.

The Shores of Tripoli

News items taken from 'Noticeboard'

News recently reached me from our friends at Treefrog Treasures in the US regarding a brand new range the company are launching, made exclusively for them by Argentine based manufacturer Honour Bound.

This new series depicts the US Marines first ever land engagement outside of the American continent. The background to this unusual encounter, as quoted by Treefrog, goes like this:

When the United States of America gained independence from Great Britain there was an unexpected problem - piracy. Removed from the protection of the British navy, US ships were prize targets for pirates across the seven seas. In 1783, the same year that the Treaty of Paris was signed, corsairs from the Barbary States began to attack American shipping in the Mediterranean. At first, the US paid tribute, to the tune of $2 million, but by 1801 it was not enough. The corsairs demanded more, and the fledgling US took a stand. The new president, Thomas Jefferson, made a bold move. He refused further payment. On May 14, 1801, the Pasha of Tripoli ordered the flag staff (flying the 'Stars and Stripes') standing in front of the US consulate to be cut down. This symbolic act was taken as a declaration of war against America.

On October 31, 1803, the US frigate Philadelphia, while on patrol against Barbary ships, ran aground on a reef near the Tripoli harbour. Captured by Tripolitan gunboats, the frigate was floated free and taken into port. Captain William Bainbridge and the ship's 307 crewmembers were imprisoned and held for ransom.

The United States responded with William Eaton, Marine Lt. Presley O’Bannon, seven marines, and 400 mercenaries, including Europeans (mainly Greeks), Arab cavalry, Turks, and a caravan of camels. The expedition began near Alexandria, Egypt and covered 500 miles across the desert to the outpost city of Derna, Tripoli.

Once at Derna, the US Marines undertook the first land engagement outside the American continent, storming the harbor defenses at bayonet point and planting the Stars and Stripes on foreign soil.

The new ‘Shores of Tripoli’ series produced by Honour Bound for Treefrog takes us to the harbor of Derna, with the US Marines and exotic mercenaries overwhelming the pirates who would dare to try and stand in the way of this new nation. The range will consist of 24 figures, including US Marines, Greeks, and Barbary Pirates (including a mounted officer) and first two sets should be available by the time you are reading this. Keep your eyes on TSC as I hope to have a full review of the range in a future issue.

Norman Joplin's Old Toy Soldier and Figure Show

Details of a specialist antique figure show happening in London in September

LONDON – On Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, promoter and toysoldier authority Norman Joplin will present his annual Old Toy Soldier and Figure Show at the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury, on Coram Street in London. Sponsored by Old Toy Soldier magazine, the show is held in the hotel’s combined Academy, Booker and Turner Rooms, and this year will feature 52 dealers selling antique and vintage toy soldiers and civilian figures from 75 tables.

“There may be bigger toy soldier shows, but this event is the only one that is a dateline show,” said Joplin. “The dealers sell only items made during the 90-year period between the 1890s and 1980s, and that’s what attracts buyers from all over the UK, Europe and even the United States. In all, there will be between fifty and seventy-five-thousand soldiers and figures available for purchase.”

High-profile British dealers who will be taking part include Lynn Kenwood, Ged Haley, Bill Kingsman, and principals of The Toy Cupboard, a business known for its inventory of extremely rare civilian figures.Continental vendors include Francois Beaumont (France), Nils Fischer (Sweden)and Thomas Finck (Germany). American dealer, publisher and auction company partner Ray Haradin will also be there, offering a fine selection of early productions by Britains, Heyde and Mignot, as well as coveted “dime store”figures.

In addition to browsing and buying, attendees will be able to chat with Hugo Marsh of Special Auction Services, Leigh Gotch of Bonhams, representatives of Old Toy Soldier magazine, and author Peter Greenhill, who will be launching his new book published by GMC Publications titled The Heraldic Sketchbook.

“We are honored that Peter has chosen to introduce his new book at this show,” said Joplin. “Peter has continued the tradition of Richard Courtenay heraldic figures by adding to the original range and producing his own widely admired line of figures under the branding of Courtenay Greenhill.Collectors are excited over the prospect of meeting Peter.”

The camaraderie with fellow collectors from around the world is, to many, the highlight of the show. “It’s a unique opportunity that happens only once a year, where everyone gathers together to buy, sell, deal, swap and socialize,” Joplin said. “We don’t charge admission for anyone under 16 because we want to encourage parents to bring their children and instill an interest in collecting toy soldiers and figures to a whole new generation. It’s a timeless, ageless hobby.”

Show details: The Old Toy Soldier and Figure Show, sponsored by Old Toy Soldier magazine, will take place at the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury, Coram Street, London, from 10:30 a.m. till4 p.m. Admission is £3 ($5), under 16 free. Early buying starts at 6:30 a.m.and costs £15 ($25). The venue is only two minutes’ walk north of Russell Square Underground station.

Toy Soldier Collector New Frontline Zulu release

New Frontline Zulu release

News item taken from 'Noticeboard'

Just after last issue went to press I received this image from Gerard Prime of Frontline Figures. Frontline have been producing a Zulu range for a number of years, in fact they were the first company as far I’m aware to do a matte Zulu range made in China. Over the last couple of years the Zulu range has slipped into the background due to the company’s focus on its other periods such as WWI.

This image shows the latest Zulu set (ZWB1) a Water Barrel, being recovered by Lieutenant John Chad and three soldiers. This new sets marks a return to the Zulu period for Frontline and we’ll have a full review of this set as soon we can get hold of one.

Toy Soldier Collector New W. Britain catalogue and Club exclusive

New W. Britain catalogue and Club exclusive

News item taken from 'Noticeboard'

In late February the new catalogue arrived from the W. Britain team. This 64 page full catalogue is, as usual, crammed full of new figures and accessories, if you haven’t got hold of a copy as yet then I’d suggest picking one up for a show, your local WB retailer or by contacting the company direct.

One of the highlights, the new Delhi Durbar Elephant, is covered later in this issue but there are also plenty of new additions to the company’s other core ranges (Zulu War, Museum Collection, Napoleonic, WWI, ACW, ARW, Archive, Redcoats, Bluecoats, Knights, Ceremonial and plastics). In addition to these new ranges such as the Heritage and Jane Austen Collections have been added as well as the welcome return of WWII.

As usual TSC will cover the new releases as they arrive in the shops between now and September, I am also reliably informed further catalogues will appear during 2009 the next one arriving in May.

In addition to the standard figures and sets within the catalogue there are a few special ‘Club Exclusives’ (sets and figures only available to members of the WB Collectors Club), the latest of which is a very striking 95th Rifles Officer, 1815. I know WB produced some 95th (when still owned by RC2) and they weren’t exactly imaginative however this new figure is a massive leap forward, the downside you have to be a Club member to purchase him plus there will only be 300 available worldwide. For information on this special figure get hold of a catalogue or visit www.wbritaincollectorsclub.com.

Toy Soldier Collector White Tower saloon

White Tower saloon

New item taken from 'Noticeboard'

New from White Tower Miniatures at the December London show was this striking Salon, which is also available as a Music Hall. White Tower state that this is a model in true 54mm scale and has an actual finished size of 10.5 inches tall by 10 inches wide. It is completely cast in resin using the company’s special MDC mould making process which allows them to perfectly capture the wood grain from the original wooden master.

This would be the perfect accompaniment to the White Tower Legends of the West range of figures (some of which are shown here but are not included with the Saloon). The Saloon is currently only available as a finished painted piece at £70 direct from White Tower.

Toy Soldier Collector 2009 toy soldier calendar

2009 toy soldier calendar

News item taken from 'Noticeboard'

Last year we mentioned a new project that David Scheinmann (best known for his work with Tradition) was busy working on, a special toy soldier themed calendar. After being featured in TSC and various other publications David received numerous orders for The Vintage Toy Soldier Calendar 2008. As it was so popular last year David has decided to do a new version for 2009 and he recently sent me an early copy.

As with last year the calendar has 12 spiral bound A4 pages, each of which features a high quality image taken from an original toy soldier themed postcard printed on to high quality heavyweight paper. Also like last year the calendar is only available direct from David at his address. The calendar is £8.00 plus P&P (£1 UK, £2 Eur and £3.50 USA/Canada). Each calendar comes in its own sturdy mailing envelope to avoid postal damage and David says he can accept sterling cheques (drawn on a UK bank account) or Visa and Mastercard. Trade enquiries are also welcomed.

W. Britain launches civilian range

News item taken from 'Noticeboard'

It’s been a few years since W. Britain launched a non-military themed range, in fact the ones I can remember were the licensed ranges depicting the Flower Fairies and Angelina Ballerina made by Britains previous owners RC2. Prior to these the heyday of the W. Britain non-military ranges was back in the 1960s when it produced the now highly sought after Miniature Garden series.

W. Britain has now decided to renter the non-military/civilian area once again but this time with a very cleverly thought out range title the Petticoats. This range is a smart move by the company as not only will it appeal to another area of the collecting fraternity, possibly the female collector, but this range of female figures may well also appeal to some of the existing W. Britain military collectors as these figures can be used as female counterparts to some of the figures in the company’s Redcoats and Bluecoats ranges. Expect to pay around £15 each for these ladies when they start arriving in the shops in October, or for further information on the range contact W. Britain direct.
