Toy Soldier of San Diego - Set #12 ‘Artillery- Cavalry- Wounded’

Review taken from 'Fantastic Plastics'

As I mentioned last issue, the new set from TSSD is for the ACW/Old West, with a mix of figures covering some gaps in its, and other makers, ranges. There are two mounted US or Confederate cavalrymen; one in slouch hat with alternative plug in hands, one with a guidon and one with a drawn sabre; the other in kepi with drawn revolver. The two horses are in two poses. The riders have sabres and slung carbines, and look the part of grizzled veterans ready to ride in Civil War battles or out West in the early campaigns against the Plains Indians.

The rest of the set are all foot figures. Two are dismounted near equivalents of the mounted riders, a neat idea and one I welcome because that is how all my skirmish characters are done, one mounted and one dismounted version of each. The figure in the kepi is kneeling and firing a revolver, just like his mounted counterpart, oddly though he has left his sabre and carbine on his horse. The other trooper is in a different pose to his mounted version, standing firing his carbine, but he’s shaved his beard off.

There are also three wounded infantry/cavalry figures, all seated or prone. One poor guy is dragging himself along on his rifle, another clutches a head wound, and the third is either unconscious or he might even just be asleep!

Finally there is a three man artillery crew. These are amongst the best artillery figures I’ve seen, with a real feeling of character and action about them. One is pushing a hand-spike into the socket on the trail to move the gun; another moves forward with a new charge ready to load the piece; whilst the third is the best of all, a big barrel-bellied ‘good old boy’ with rammer in one hand and a ham hock of a fist raised in a defiant gesture at the enemy! Superb figure making and one of TSSD’s best yet, which is saying something.
