Toy Soldier Collector Tommy Atkins - Bagots Hussars

Tommy Atkins - Bagots Hussars

Review taken from 'New Releases'

When I came across these interestingly uniformed figures on the Tommy Atkins tables, at the June London show, I had to ask the Turner family (who run Tommy Atkins) what they were. Not being a historical expert, especially when it comes to the Second Jacobite Rebellion, I honestly didn’t know what these figures were, all I did know was they were certainly getting some attention from passers by the TA tables.

Bagots Hussars, which is what these figures portray, were raised as a light cavalry unit in 1745 by John Murray of Broughton. Almost immediately the Hussars gained a reputation within the army for ‘being of poor quality’ and prone to looting so Charles Edward Stuart handed over command to a profession Irish soldier, Major John Bagot. Bagot soon got the unit into order and it was soon being used for scouting duties. Bagot’s Hussars saw action Clifton Moor, Falkirk and Culloden and were supposedly the first actual Hussar regiment within the British Isles.

Tommy Atkins portrayal of these early Hussars has been well achieved with typical Hussar headgear and tartan jackets. Horse poses are action themed but with more a cantering feel to them rather than a full gallop. The figures in gloss finish are £30 each and knowing Tommy Atkins are also available with a matte paint job by request or possibly also as castings if you prefer to paint your own figures.
