Toy Soldiers of San Diego ACW Cavalry

Review taken from 'Fantastic Plastics'

The latest plastic set from TSSD is a new departure for this innovative company. TSSD already do excellent ACW infantry, of course, and now they have produced a set of ACW cavalry to go with them. There are six riders in six poses with six horses. A seventh pose will be possible by using either the ‘plug hand with pistol’ or the ‘plug hand with flag’ on the figure made to take them, a nice touch which overcomes the problem which some collectors have with a specialist in each set (I must write a piece on how easy trumpeters and standard bearers are to convert!).

The cavalry are designed to be used for either side in the ACW. They are equipped with Spencer carbines, Colt pistols and holsters and sabres. There are three in kepis, three in slouch hats. Two have drawn sabres, two pistols, one a guidon or pistol, two are firing carbines. Uniforms are the short cavalry jacket of the period on five, and one is in shirt sleeves and suspenders (braces).

The detail is, as always with TSSD figures, exceptionally good – crisp and sharp. The faces are of real characters – another TSSD hallmark. The rider colour choices are ‘Union blue’, ‘Confederate grey’, and ‘medium blue’ which matches the Airfix reissue 7th Cavalry. The horses are in four poses in four random colours black, brown, grey and tan and are deliberately fairly generic, as TSSD intend to use them for other periods because horses are so difficult and expensive to sculpt and manufacture. These are the best ACW cavalry around, and would be easily adaptable to make Plains Wars era cavalry too – a super, must-have set.
