Toy Soldier Collector New Books

New Books

News item taken from 'Noticeboard'

As smoking in the UK was pretty much outlawed last month, it was a funny coincidence that at almost the same time two books arrived at the office, on what else but cigarette cards. You’d think this is a funny subject to be talking about in a toy soldier magazine, but not when you realise that the two books are on cigarette and trading cards depicting military subject matter.

The first book I received is on the Queens Own Highlanders (Seaforths and Camerons), whilst the second is on The Royal Marines. Each book appears well put together, comes as a paperback and has around 58 pages cover to cover. Although the subject matter, and by this I mean cigarette and trading cards, holds little interest for me and no doubt many of you, the books themselves are interesting just because of the number of colour uniform images. However, before you rush out to buy them just be aware that only around half of the images in book are full colour, but still at only £9.95 including postage within the UK they’re interesting enough to warrant further investigation.

Currently in the range there are 14 books on different regiments from the British army and all are available direct from the author Mr. David J. Hunter.

In addition to the two cigarette/trading card books I also received a couple of interesting new books courtesy of www.aviationbookcentre.com. The first book is just one in a series called ‘Histoire & Collections’ which, from what I can gather, are originally French publications that have now been translated and published in English.

The book I was sent was on the ACW and titled ‘Volume 2 Cavalry Artillery’ (ISBN 2 913 903 002) and is actually a really useful reference book, not necessarily for the text but more for the highly detailed colour illustrations of the uniforms. There are a total of eight books in this series, on a variety of subject, and I must say if you’re interested in uniform details for painting figures then these are well worth a look. Priced at around £11.99 each (plus postage) in paperback they’re comparable to the Osprey series in style and price.

The second book I received is titled ‘An Illustrated Encyclopaedia Of Uniforms Of The Napoleonic Wars’ (ISBN 0 7548 1571 4). This is a hard back book with 256 pages, all in colour. Priced at around £20.00 (plus postage) this seems to be excellent value for money for anyone with an interest in the Napoleonic period from 1792 through to 1815. Basic information is given on all countries/armies involved and backed up with some excellent colour drawings of regimental uniforms.

Considering how expensive colour Napoleonic books can be I have to say this appears to be great value for money.
