Toy Soldier Collector Foamscenes - Dioramas & Scenics

Foamscenes - Dioramas & Scenics

Review taken from Fantastic Plastics

Our hobby isn’t just about the figures, collectors like to use terrain items in their displays and large scale wargamers need terrain for their battles. Many go for a minimalist approach of simple glass shelves or opt for DIY. But what if you want more but your skills are not up to it? There are now a number of companies offering items to be used as scenic items to display figures on or indeed to fight wargames over.

The latest to come along has been set up by Ashley Gill, to make scenic pieces and accessories for toy soldier and model figure collectors, wargamers and model railway enthusiasts. Called Foamscenes Ltd, it produces pieces using foam, plaster or resin.

There is already an impressive list of products within the four main categories of Foamscenes, Accessories, Dioramas and Showcases. They range across the eras from Roman and Medieval, through ECW/Napoleonic, to ACW/Wild West, Colonial, up to WWI/WWII, and even the modern wars Gulf/Afghan/Middle-East. Pieces are either one-off showcase products or cast in limited quantities and come in many scales, but of particular interest to readers will be 1:30 and 1:32. As well as a growing range of production models, collectors or gamers who have their own ideas can see them turned into reality through the company’s commission service.

All the items are available painted to a high standard and ready to immediately take their place in a display cabinet. They can also be bought as castings, and the sculpting is of such good quality that they respond very well to a wide range of DIY painting standards.

Prices depend on size and complexity, reflecting the amount of work involved in making the original and the material used in the mould and casting. Unpainted items are cheapest, of course. As an example of painted costs, a set of nicely sculpted ‘Box Wall Barricades’, painted to a very high standard, are £12 to £14. One of my favourites is a ‘Normandy 1944 Outhouse’ (two seater khazi), complete with a Nazi propaganda poster, which is £16 painted. A very modest outlay on these excellent pieces provide material to greatly enhance any display of model figures or wargame.
