Toy Soldier Collector Astur Toys - Medieval Seige Vignette

Astur Toys - Medieval Seige Vignette

Review taken from 'Casting Around'

I have never featured any resin figures before for the simple reason that no-one has ever sent me any. But this has now been corrected in a very impressive way by Astur Toys in Spain. Astur Toys is the name of a Spanish painting and sculpting studio that have been in business for more than fifteen years. Their output includes some remarkable medieval figures so, when I was offered the chance to review their medieval siege vignette, I jumped at it.

In its unpainted form, the vignette comes as a kit consisting of five figures (well, four and a half really), a tower and a length of wall, battlements for these, a ladder and a detailed base. The figures are quite splendid, cleanly cast and well detailed. Just a little filing and trimming may be needed but there are none of the features found with some resin figures in the past (e.g. the need to remove sizeable lumps of surplus resin from figures, not always easy). For a piece of this kind, assembly is minimal. In the case of the figures, only the standing soldier’s shield and the kneeling soldier’s crossbow need to be attached. The climbing figure just needs to be attached to the ladder and the ‘casualty’ to be positioned in the tower window. The tower, wall, battlements, ladder and base fit together well but a little filler is likely to be needed between the component parts.

It’s important to note that the offerings from Astur Toys are limited editions and once an edition is finished the moulds are destroyed. The vignette is from a limited edition of seventy five kits and each one comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by the author of the work, Marco Navas. It’s possible that the pieces may attract increased value over time but, in the short term, it means that any items that take your fancy need to be purchased pretty quickly to avoid missing the opportunity.

The figures measure 58mm approx and the assembled kit measures 19cm high by 16cm wide by 8cm deep. The box art provides an optional painting guide and shows just how good the vignette will look when painted with care. It’s not something to be rushed. Prices may need to be checked by the time you read this but, at the time the kit was sent to me, the unpainted kit was priced at £69.14. (£198.73 assembled and painted matt). P&P may also need to be checked and will vary for different destinations but, as a guide, postage to the UK and most of Europe was quoted as £12.00 approx and at $20.00 approx for the USA. And if you are in Spain and wish to visit Astur please be aware an appointment must be made in advance.
