Helmet Soldiers - Various new accessories

Review taken from 'Fantastic Plastics'

It’s been a while since Eric Kemp’s kits featured here, and a lot has been happening. Not all of it good as Eric has been unwell, but he keeps producing new ideas showing what amazing figures can be made with his Helmet figures and accessories. He sent me some photos of his latest creations, Polish Winged Hussars! These figures look even better than the photos and must be some of the best plastic conversions I have ever seen. These guys are just magnificent. They show what can be done with a little imagination and a lot of skill, and serve as an inspiration to us less talented modellers.

Then there is one of Helmets new handmade accessories, an archers' mantelet. This and a couple of other pieces are now for sale on the website at remarkably low prices.

Miniature flags can be a real problem, as few makers produce them. So the news that Helmet are producing a range of 54mm/1:32 flags is really good news. The first set is for the 1st Foot Guards at Waterloo. They come with a cavalry standard as a bonus and retail at £2 plus postage. Eric paints them in watercolours at twice full size, then they are scanned and reduced for printing, making for exceptional detail. He has also completed a sheet with eight Parliamentary cavalry standards from the English Civil War, and is working on French flags for 1815, these should be available shortly.

Further good news is that there is a projected range of allied cavalry for the Napoleonic period. First to see the light of day will be a Prussian Uhlan, followed by a Hussar. Eric is also working on a new body so that Helmet can produce Dragoons, Cuirassiers and Landwehr cavalry. This is excellent, as it will enable collectors and gamers of the period to complete their forces with Prussian cavalry. As you can see from the photos, Helmet figures make up into excellent models. The combination of parts means that there can be subtle variations in poses with the same kit. The number of bits is good too, as there are enough to achieve those subtle differences, but not so many that assembly becomes a chore.
